A Rutgers Preparatory School student will represent Somerset County in the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Eighth grader Nitya Kathiravan won the sixth annual Somerset County Spelling Bee Spectacular on March 5, hosted by the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ).

Second place went to Atharv Narvekar, a seventh grader from Montgomery Upper Middle School.

The winning word was Telamon, a noun, originally a Greek word that then passed into Latin, and is defined as a male figure used as a supporting column or pilaster.

Kathiravan will go on to compete in the Washington, D.C., national championship competition.

Bee Week 2022 will take place May 29-June 3 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.
